The Terrace Cafe – Botanical Garden Melbourne
In collaboration with Technē Architecture and The Darling Group, Mortadello terrazzo was specified for the new Terrace Café, translating the surrounding garden landscape into a tactile, material expression. The project explores terrazzo as both a durable architectural surface and a medium for storytelling, grounding the hospitality space within its natural and historic context.
Mortadello’s ‘Wilderness’ terrazzo was selected as the primary palette, its organic aggregate reflecting the tones and textures of the gardens. The material was applied across a curated suite of custom indoor–outdoor terrazzo furniture, designed specifically for public use within the courtyard setting.
The furniture collection includes:
Fifteen square terrazzo table tops, each measuring 850 × 850mm with soft 100mm radius corners, mounted on ‘no rock’ table bases. Sized to comfortably seat four people, these tables form the main collective arrangement throughout the Terrace courtyard.
Six standing bar tables, designed as a slimmer, elevated interpretation of Mortadello’s 4 Pin table. Each features a 600mm diameter round ‘Wilderness’ terrazzo top, paired with satin white powder-coated steel frames.
Two Block tables at coffee-table height, combining a ‘Tera Rosa’ terrazzo base with a Dusty Pink powder-coated steel top. The Block table design is also available in a larger dining-height format, reinforcing its adaptability across hospitality settings.
This project demonstrates the durability and versatility of terrazzo in commercial and outdoor environments. All terrazzo elements were treated with a heavy-duty protective sealer, ensuring long-term performance against weather exposure and high-volume public use while maintaining the material’s refined aesthetic.
