Nicholas Hall restoration - Melbourne
Located in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, the heritage-listed Nicholas Hall has undergone a considered redevelopment, transforming the building into a contemporary workplace while preserving its historic character.
Mortadello Terrazzo was engaged to undertake the restoration of the building’s original terrazzo flooring, a process that required both technical precision and deep respect for the fabric of the space. Our scope included the full restoration of the existing terrazzo floor, along with the creation of a 5-square-metre terrazzo infill slab, seamlessly extending the original floor plate.
Given the building’s heritage status, the project involved an extensive sample development and approval process. Terrazzo mixes were carefully refined to match the original aggregate composition, colour balance, and finish, ensuring the new work sat comfortably alongside the historic fabric. Particular attention was given to the border detailing, resulting in the most intricate and finely resolved border work Mortadello Terrazzo has undertaken to date.
The completed floor retains the richness and craftsmanship of the original terrazzo, while meeting the performance requirements of a modern workplace. The project demonstrates Mortadello Terrazzo’s expertise in heritage terrazzo restoration, where accuracy, restraint, and material understanding are essential.
