art deco restoration - caulfield north
This historic double brick residence, influenced by Art Deco architecture, features original 1930s terrazzo flooring that has been carefully restored by Mortadello Terrazzo to honour its craftsmanship and extend its lifespan for generations to come.
Both the veranda entry and terrazzo bathroom—originally embellished with mother of pearl aggregate, a decorative hallmark of the era—were in urgent need of conservation. Years of wear had resulted in large pinholes, cracks, and aged repairs that detracted from the integrity of the original surface.
Mortadello Terrazzo undertook a meticulous restoration process, colour-matching and grouting pinholes and cracks, while improving and refining pre-existing repairs. The terrazzo flooring was then carefully cut back, honed, deep-cleaned, and polished, before the application of a final protective sealer.
This considered approach restored the terrazzo’s original depth and character, revealing renewed pops of colour, lustre, and detail while maintaining the authenticity of the original material. The result is a revitalised surface that respects the home’s architectural heritage while meeting contemporary performance expectations.
This lengthy and detail-driven restoration ensures that this important piece of architectural history is preserved for another 100 years. A testament to enduring craftsmanship, we hope the original terrazzo artisans would be proud.
